Spec work exists across creative industries: a designer mocks up a logo hoping an agency buys it, a copywriter drafts sample ad lines on their own time. A spec ad applies the same idea to UGC: a creator films and edits a full video around a brand's product with no brief, no contract, and no guarantee the brand will ever see it, then sends it cold in hopes of a sale.
The upside is a strong, unsolicited example in a portfolio and a shot at landing a brand that never would have replied to a cold pitch alone. The downside is real: without a contract, a brand that likes the idea can shoot something similar in-house or hire a different creator to redo it, leaving the original creator with no payment and little recourse.
A qualification floor and a posted campaign remove the need for spec work on Socialync's job board: creators apply to a listed job with stated pay and terms, rather than filming on spec and hoping a brand notices.
