What does Simp mean?

A simp is someone who does way too much for a person they are attracted to — excessive attention, money, or devotion with nothing reciprocated. "Simping" is the act. Peak meme circa 2020, it settled into standard vocabulary, used both as a jab and self-deprecatingly about harmless devotion.

Simp existed in hip-hop for decades before TikTok's "Simp Nation" memes made it ubiquitous. The core accusation is disproportion: donating rent money to a streamer, rewriting your schedule for someone who barely replies. It carried a misogynistic edge in some communities (mocking any kindness toward women), which sparked backlash and partial reclamation.

By 2026 the sting has mostly faded — people freely self-identify as simps for celebrities, fictional characters, and their own partners ("simping for my wife of 10 years"). In streaming culture it still describes parasocial overspending, where it overlaps with whale/parasocial vocabulary.

FAQs about Simp

Is simp still an insult?

Barely. It started as mockery, but widespread self-deprecating use ("I'm a simp for this show") drained most of the venom. Context decides whether it is teasing or genuinely critical.

What is simping in streaming culture?

Spending heavily on donations and gifts for a streamer you are parasocially attached to. It is the context where the term keeps its most pointed meaning.
