What does Sus mean?

Sus is short for suspicious or suspect — describing anything that seems off, shady, or untrustworthy. Decades old in AAVE, it exploded globally in 2020 through Among Us, where identifying the "sus" impostor was the whole game. It remains everyday vocabulary for mild suspicion.

Sus predates the internet — it appears in 1960s British police slang and long-running AAVE usage — but Among Us made it one of the most recognized slang words on Earth. "That's kinda sus" works on anything: a friend's alibi, suspicious food, an app's permissions request.

Post-Among Us, sus settled into permanent casual vocabulary. It is mild — closer to "questionable" than "criminal" — and safe across audiences. The Among Us association also gave it a comedic gaming undertone that still colors usage ("red is sus" remains a reflexive joke).
