What does Reels mean?

Reels are Instagram and Facebook's short-form vertical videos, Meta's answer to TikTok. They are up to 90 seconds (longer on some accounts), surfaced heavily in a dedicated tab and the main feed, and prioritized by the algorithm — making them the primary way to reach non-followers on Instagram.

Meta launched Reels in 2020 to compete with TikTok and has pushed them aggressively ever since, giving Reels outsized reach compared with photo posts. For creators chasing discovery on Instagram, Reels are effectively mandatory because they are what the recommendation system promotes to people who do not already follow you.

Reels support trending audio, text overlays, effects, and remixes, and they cross-post to Facebook. Strong hooks, captions optimized for the first second, and trending sounds all matter, and the same vertical video typically performs across Reels, TikTok, and YouTube Shorts — which is why cross-posting tools exist.

FAQs about Reels

How long can a Reel be?

Instagram Reels can be up to 90 seconds for most accounts, with some accounts able to post longer videos as Reels. Shorter, hook-driven Reels generally perform best for reach.

Do Reels get more reach than photos?

Generally yes. Meta prioritizes Reels in the algorithm to compete with TikTok, so video typically reaches more non-followers than photo posts or carousels — though carousels still perform well for saves and engagement.
