What does Hashtag mean?

A hashtag is a keyword preceded by the # symbol that groups posts around a topic and makes them discoverable when users search or tap the tag. Once central to reach, hashtags now play a smaller, more topical role as platforms shift toward keyword search and recommendation-based discovery.

Hashtags began as a way to categorize content and join conversations — clicking one shows every public post using it. They were once the main discovery lever, and "hashtag strategy" filled marketing blogs with advice on how many to use and which to pick.

Their role has shrunk as algorithms moved toward content understanding and on-platform search. Today they work best as topical signals and for niche communities and campaigns rather than reach hacks. Platforms increasingly reward clear, searchable captions and on-screen text over stuffing twenty tags under a post.

FAQs about Hashtag

Do hashtags still matter?

They matter less than they used to. With platforms favoring keyword search and recommendation algorithms, hashtags now work mainly as topical signals and for niche communities or campaigns, rather than as a primary reach tactic.

How many hashtags should you use?

A handful of relevant, specific tags generally outperforms cramming in the maximum. Quality and topical fit matter more than quantity, and clear searchable captions now carry much of the discovery weight hashtags once did.
