The word started in music ("glo up," popularized by Chief Keef) and broadened into mainstream slang for any glow-from-the-inside transformation. It is overwhelmingly positive and aspirational, applied to people, pets, rooms, and even businesses ("the brand had a real glow-up").
As a content format, glow-up videos are reliable performers because they front-load curiosity (the "before") and pay it off (the "after"). Creators in beauty, fitness, fashion, and home renovation lean on it constantly, often with a transition synced to a trending audio. The flip side, a "glow-down," is used jokingly for the opposite.
